Neurodermatitis, Eczema, Itching

Your skin should protect you, not keep you busy.

Neurodermatitis, eczema and itching can cause stressful symptoms that affect everyday life. If itching leads to scratching, bacterial infections can worsen the skin’s condition. The basic prerequisite for the right therapy and relief is finding the right causes. We help you to stabilise the skin’s protective barrier with the use of antipruritic and anti-inflammatory creams to make you feel much better again.

Your questions.
Our answers.

What is neurodermatitis?

This is a chronic skin inflammation that often occurs together with hay fever and asthma. The underlying weakening of the skin’s protective barrier is genetically inherited. Inflammation usually occurs in the crook of the arm and the hollow of the knee, as well as on the face and neck. Many patients also suffer from hay fever and other allergies. T he diagnosis should be made by a dermatologist.

Could dry and itchy skin indicate neurodermatitis?

Dry skin does not necessarily mean neurodermatitis and itchiness can have many other causes.

How is neurodermatitis treated?

Our treatment is based on skin care to strengthen the skin’s own barrier function. Depending on the inflammatory activity, we can use anti-inflammatory agents on a temporary basis.

Is neurodermatitis curable?

The disease can relapse. However, most of our patients have hardly any complaints after the age of 30.

What is eczema and how can it develop?

Eczema is a chronic, non-infectious inflammation of the skin. The causes need to first be identified and then avoided. A stage-dependent treatment with cortisone-containing creams can usually help. In cases of severe itching, antihistamines can also be beneficial. In the case of acute eczema, we offer a short-term internal cortisone treatment or, in the case of a bacterial infection, we can prescribe antibiotics.

How can eczema be prevented?

Eczema can be prevented by stabilising the skin’s protective barrier through the use of moisturising creams. Skin drying activities, such as long, hot showers or baths, should also be avoided.

What could cause chronic itching?

The reasons are extremely diverse. A distinction should be made between the itching of inflammatory skin (e. g. in the case of atopic dermatitis, urticaria, drug reactions, lichen ruber, T-cell lymphomas, blister-forming skin diseases, psoriasis etc), the itching of unchanged skin (e. g. in the case of kidney diseases, diabetes mellitus, triggered by drugs, tumours, haematooncological disorders, neurological causes and psychiatric and psychosomatic causes) and the itching of chronic lesions formed by scratching.

How does itching develop?

Fine nerve fibres in the skin (non-myelinated C fibres) trigger and transmit itching.

How can the cause be identified?

After a detailed discussion with the patient, a physical examination provides us with initial clues as to how the itching has developed. If necessary, we conduct blood tests and take skin samples.

How is itching treated?

Depending on the underlying cause, we can help with creams containing cortisone or capsaicin, antihistamines and antiepileptics. We recommend an anamnesis appointment for planning the therapy.
